What is time go fast...
It is very difficult to choose a best puppy from a picture.
I don't like how the puppy's stands SORRY.
The back legs stands too far backwards.
The front legs is under the ears and i think they must stands under the shoulder...
I am sorry but I don't like it... SORRY
But it is my opinion,I hope you understands...

I believe you asked us to evaluate your puppies. But no dog can be properly evaluated if it is not standing correctly.
Stretching the rear out too far makes the topline slope more. It makes one wonder, does the puppy have a bad topline or is it so straight in the rear that the rear must be pulled out too far so that one thinks there is more rear? We don't get to see what the dog *really IS*.
This also brings up something I have been wondering about. It seems that many of you sell your puppies very soon.... I mean, like before you can really get an honest evaluation of them in regard to structure, movement, and size. (Maybe size is not as important in your country as it is here.)
When I breed, I usually want to keep the BEST for *myself*. I start stacking the puppies when they are tiny as many of you do, and I do a general evaluation of them. If there is anyone I really do not like for some reason... too much white on front or toes (some I have seen on this forum have too much white for my taste), no angulation, ewe-neck, testicles, etc., then I place that puppy in a pet home at around 9 weeks. Anyone else I "grow out". I hold on to them and then start seriously evaluating (standing and moving) and measuring them each month at 3, 4, 5, and six months. Each month I decide if anyone is leaving or staying. If someone is looking for a dog for conformation, he will most likely be getting an older puppy from me so that I can be sure of the teeth/bite and the dog's final size (more important in male than bitch).
Doesn't anyone else do something like this? Or am I the only one?

Re: Black Mini - "R" Litter Dolina RIvendell FCI
I think like you, but it's difficult to have dogs during few monthes before choose who is the best ! last year a have had a liter with 6 females so i think it was an oppotunity to keep one for me ! so i made a selestion of 3 females who stay here 4 weeks more the other. I made photos in static, and the more important i look very very long time about them. When they playing, fighting together. The size is very important in france too so like you i take size at 4 weks, and after one time by week. i would have a "little" female and witch i choose is 32 cms !
This is a photo of her at 1 month, it's not so spectacular of cause ....

Re: Black Mini - "R" Litter Dolina RIvendell FCI
I find that birth weight and those early measurements usually have absolutely nothing to do with the dog's eventual size. It may work for some, but my dogs grow very slowly and take about two years before they finally mature. After all these years, I can usually make a pretty good "guess" about final height with my monthly measurements, but at that point, I am usually more concerned about someone going oversize. I once bred into a line that could have growth spurts at around eight months of age, and now I have to watch for that in my larger puppies (usually males).
Most of my litters are usually 6-8 (largest was 9), and I find it is easier to find a good puppy when there are more to select from.... except in the litter of nine. There were puppies running everywhere, and it was impossible to keep track of them when I was trying to evaluate their movement as they were all so dark and at first glance looked so much alike.
What I am saying is that puppies just change so much in those first few months that it is too easy to pick the wrong puppy for oneself and to put what will become the best dog into a pet home. (Which means that it would be neutered.)

I stack the puppy up (correctly!) and evaluate it as it stands, just as though I was a judge in the ring. Then I pick the puppy up and drop its front, and then rear, to see how the feet land. http://britmorschnauzers.com/performance.html
Finally, I watch the puppy to see how it moves around the yard (or on a leash if you can get someone to help you). A dog with good movement was a puppy with good movement. Some ugly puppy movement will improve with age when the ribs spring, but better to look for the puppy who moves with reach and drive and moves true already. All parts of the dog are important, but some are more important to me than others.
The front and rear are the most important parts to me, as those are what enable the dog to work all day without tiring. To me, a schnauzer is a working dog (even though they have us in the Terrier Group here). A working dog is meant to be propelled (pushed) by its rear, not pulled along by its front!
Pick the best puppy... not the best puppy of the sex you want. Many years ago, I would only consider a bitch... NEVER a male. And then my most important litter was arriving.... and we ended up at the veterinary clinic. Two boys and two girls, and one girl was dead. The second one died the next day, and I was left with two boys. I was going to sell both boys, but one grabbed my heart... and you can see his photo below. I have loved the boys ever since. I would have nothing but boys now, except that it is hard to be a breeder with no bitches around.

By the way, you can see necks, toplines and tailsets when the puppies are newborns and nursing. I also look for the puppy who is nursing on his belly with his rear feet placed wide apart as that will indicate how he will move as an adult. (If feet are close, he will move that way.)

Re: Black Mini - "R" Litter Dolina RIvendell FCI
Oh, thanks for your answer! I have only one question after thar - in which age is better to look who probably be the best?
And, I have females and males at my home, but I't very hard to keep them together when some females have their heat. And that's the reason why I will keep for myself only females.

Re: Black Mini - "R" Litter Dolina RIvendell FCI
Rivendel, your puppies are wonderfull! And here in Latvia we either don't keep puppies for so long time, we start to give them away from 8 weeks! And all of us try to make photos with puppies in the same way as you did - to show how probably they will look when they grow up. And I think that to choose puppy only from photos it's not possible (if only you know parents and their offsprings from other litters). But photos can help to see approximetly how do all litter looks and decide - do you want to see them in real life!

That is something that you will learn about your own dogs as you do more breeding. Here, I don't look *seriously* at my puppies until they are three months old when I take that first measurement. They do so much changing in those early weeks. (Anyone I really dislike leaves at 8-9 weeks.)
When I bred out for head improvement a few years ago, the entire litter was undershot for a few weeks. I was pretty upset about that until their heads started changing and lengthening. BOY, would I have been mad if I had placed them at eight weeks and then saw them later!!!! Some of you would have been happier, though*G*... one of those puppies was the dam of Ch. Scedir Britmor New Age, the bitch I sent to Italy. LOL!
