Ears..............
Ears
UK
Neat, V-shaped, set high and dropping forward to temple.
FCI
Drop ears, set high, V-shaped with inner edges lying close to the cheeks, evenly carried, turned forward towards temples. Folds parallel, should not be above the top of the skull
USA
When uncropped, the ears are small and V-shaped, folding close to the skull.
Interesting to see that in the UK and USA that the higher ear set without any mention of the ears not being above the top of the skull.
I thought it would be interesting if breeders would post photos of dogs they consider to have the ideal ears.

Re: Ears..............
You would think the dogs in my avatar have ears that are to high set?
I'm trying to work out how the FCI asks for high set ears that are stuck on the side of the head.

Re: Ears..............
About ears - my opinion.
@ Jo,
I think the dogs on your avatar have different ears-set.
Left one - more high, but acceptable. Right one - normal ears.
I can show what I consider perfect ears
(here one photo from USA-dog)
And another dogs, from Europa
puppy with good ears (so I think)

Here the male hasfor me to high ears,i let then more hiar on the head.
If you look you seeit on the outside of the ears how diffirent it is.
This is for me the right ear as a puppy
I have normaly no problems with ears
And I agree with Marant about the ears of your 2 miniĀ“s

Re: Ears..............
Ok, interesting you like Vinnys ears as they do sit above the top of the skull. The other lower ears you have posted (in the UK) would be considered more like large 'hound like' ears which would be a fault. The ears you like are probably more typical of the Giant Schnauzers we have.
Of my two minis in the avatar, it is the one on the left who has had compliments on her ears.
Nice puppy ears
that can become very expressive ears lol
(excuse the red lines) high ears
nice adult ears
This is another of the girl on the left of my avatar
large, houndy ears
I think it is interesting to see how we compare various parts of the dog, it helps to exlain a little bit, why some will look at a dog and call it a show quality/promising dog and others will wonder what they are looking at to make the dog show quality

He is in a nice pet home, due to the white on his beard, the ears were just very expressive when i was taking some photos but do sit well and correct normally.

Re: Ears..............
So, as I have understood, that in England the ears will be classified quite differently than in other FCI-countries.
All the ears you have shown as correct are too high in my opinion. But in Germany it is not very strictly, dog on the left of your avatar will not have a bad note on shows.
These ears I really like !

But I prefer the ears like D'el casa di Vita more, than a high ears.
I think, that all dogs and puppies she has shown here (black color) have great ears!

Re: Ears..............
Breed standards are always subject to interpretation... and we do not always interpret words the same way, even in our own country.
The ears that one here considers houndy I do not find hound-like at all. These ears are breaking above the skull, and to me, a houndy ear would not break that high. I do consider these ears to be a bit too large, however.
This is a houndy, low-set ear:
To me, as I interpret my country's breed standard, our ears should break above the skull, but not too high, and should break as close to the top of the skull as possible, but never below it. The end of the ear should drop to about the corner of the eye. (My ears do tend to be a bit larger than that sometimes.) Where many of us seem to differ here in my country is that I prefer my ears to drop alongside the dog's cheeks, while others here want to see a more terrier ear and want it to sit more on top of the dog's skull. Those higher ears will fly all over the place when the dog moves, and I consider that incorrect.

Freya's daughter Isla has ears like that Marta!
@ Marant,
Thank ytou, it is nice to see what europe likes in comparison to england and again to america.
Thanks Jo for starting this thread, its been very interesting and also it helps me define my own personal choices, likes and dislikes when you see the different types of ears.

Re: Ears..............
No problem! I think it is good to understand each other (from different countries/breed standards) particularly if we are using bloodlines from other countries, or sending a dog for show/breeding or importing a dog for the same. It isn't really good enough to say 'the dog has good .......' we need to know, first, what the other person means when they say a dog is strong in various areas.
Now - what part of the dog to talk about next?
