I have dogs with Distiachiasis.
It is when Eye Lash is growing inside.

We have quite hairy breed with a lot of hairs on the face...and it can happend that some hair is also growing on wrong places. It can be 1 hair in 1 eye or more hairs on both eyes.

It is in the Black list because it can cause Eye surface damage.
I have absolutely no problems with affected dogs and they eyes.
Also veterinarians say its not big problem (in US even not checked) and mostly dont pay attention to this. It is allowed to breed, but surely it is better to keep in mind and breed with clean stud/female.

Ofcourse the poeple who want to test every year will test every year, but the breeders who won't test the dogs would't test the dogs....

Is there anyone know how it is with the DNA of the schnauzer for PRA and Cataract???

Entropian is where the eyelid curls in towards the eye (typical in Shar Pei) distichiasis is where there is a second line of lashes on the inside of the lid (could be one lash or lots), and these hairs can scratch the eye in some cases, in others they don't cause a problem. These hairs can be plucked from the dog before an eye test - if a breeder is of a mind to hide the problem BUT the hairs would then grow back harsher and cause the dog more problems long term (i had this conversation a while ago with my eye vet)

Lashes also change, like every hair: falling out and new are growing after a time.
I heard of 7 days circle in this case ...but I can be mistaken.
So it can happen that one time Eye is clean and other time -there is hair.

In Germany you must bring old Eye Test with you to make new, so when its marked in papers...
vets look and extra check Distiachiasis again..lol..I dont think that someone can dare to write 'clean' after.

When the dog is positief it will never been clean....
It is very straigh thing, when you are lucky, your dog is clean...............but next year can he have it.

I wish this project would be successful. It will surely help many giant schnauzer dogs in the future. It will prevent them from having genetic defects. Smile

They need more samples from affected dogs before they can find the mutation.

So if anyone has a dog who fails an eye test with cataracts or PRA do contact the AHT for a free test kit - it is just a cheek swab and you can do all this anonymously.

The Miniature Schnauzer is a feisty and playful dog. It tends to be overtly active at times and often gets hurt in the process. One should be extremely careful while playing with it.The most common problem that a Miniature Schnauzer owner faces while playing with his dog is when the dog hurts himself in the face and even worse, in the eyes. The dog should never be allowed to hang his head outside the window because flying debris and even insects can harm his vision. If the dog gathers dirt in his eyes, a concoction of 2 cups of water and a teaspoon of salt should be the perfect solution. Without touching his eyes, a cotton swab should be dipped into the concoction and his eyes can be effectively cleaned with the same. Avoid eye drops unless prescribed by the vet.Powders and soaps are to be completely avoided and trimming and clipping the hair around the eyes can go a long way in preventing irritation and eye infection.
Excess mucus or tearing, cataract and glaucoma are some of the eye ailments that are seen to affect a Miniature Schnauzer. But the most common among all ailments is the dry eye.Just as it sounds like, the dry eye syndrome is when the dog's eyes become dry and he suffers from irritation.
According to vets, the Miniature Schnauzer suffers from dry eyes because the dog's immune system mistakes its tear glands for a foreign object that needs to be destroyed. When the tear glands are unable to produce adequate moisture to combat the immune system's attack, the eyes become more and more dry.
Dry eye often leads to injured corneas, infections and even blindness. The most common symptoms are rubbing of eyes, reddened eyes, yellow discharge, and squinting and even cloudiness of vision.
This ailment is more rampant in middle-aged to senior dogs as compared to the younger ones.
When the first signs of dry eyes are noticed, one should immediately rush his Miniature Schnauzer to the veterinarian before conducting any kind of treatment of his own.
