I've always had miniature schnauzers but am thinking of getting a giant. Can anyone give me some insight into the differences in personality?

Thanks,

I wouldn't say they are much different, so long as they get plenty of early socialising and training they are great dogs. They also need more exercise, without it they can make your life difficult. They take much longer to grow up mentally then a mini.

My older giant was never much for having a fuss, would prefer to play ball games then have a love, now she is older (10) she is happy to have a hug.

There is quite a range in the temperament within the breed (at least there is here) so you should be able to find a dog you can happily live with.

I have a fenced yard and could take it for a walk most days (weather permitting). Are they destructive around the house?

I find it is easier to take them for at least an hour off lead exercise a day or they will find things to do that you may not want them doing.

Hhmmm...maybe I'd better just stick with minis. I live alone and that was the main reason I was considering a giant, as a better guard. At least the minis can make lots of noise I guess.

Thanks so much for your replies Smile

I agree with Jo you might find your giant very much destructive if he will not get enough exercise. And they can destroy things very easily in seconds.

Fenced yard is never enough unless you want your giant digging holes in you yard Smile For me that I have white miniature and a giant it would not be possible unless I work them all part of the day + freerun at least for 1,5 - 2 hours a free run on different land, mountains, lava and other rough sides.

But as Jo says you might also find a giant that is lead back but that one you cannot find just in the litterbox you better then search for an audult that is looking for rehoming. And sadly to say there are lot of them in rescue centers why do you not check them out. There you might find a giant that do not need all the things the puppy needs.

The differences between the three breeds are:

If you owned all three breeds and an intruder broke into your house, the Miniature would sound the alarm, the Standard would hold the intruder at bay, and the Giant would take him DOWN.

As Anna says, you need a tidy house as they will reach up on the work surfaces in the kitchen and help themselves to whatever they can reach.

My younger giant is a laid back soul but even she will start her little tricks, barking at the TV or just sat in the middle of the room barking, to tell me she is bored.

If you are thinking of a dog for protection but don't have the time to put in plenty of exercise with the more active breeds, think about something like a Bullmastiff, if you can cope with the slobber
