Awards of Merit are usually only offered to champions in the Best of Breed class at the biggest specialties. It means the dog in question wasn't quite good enough to be given an award (BOB or BOS), but it is good enough to get an honorable mention. The number of Awards of Merits given out depends on the number of champions entered.

Westminster Kennel Club is the exception, as it is a show that is limited to only champions of record.
