Standard Schnauzer shedding
Hello.
My standard Schnauzer is about 16 months old now. He has always shed like crazy. I know thier not suposed to shed much at all.
I feed him ACANA organic dog food.
I get him groomed aver 3 months or so.
I brush him on a regular basi.
Is there somethin I can do, or feed him to keep the shedding down?

Re: Standard Schnauzer shedding
maybe he is missing something in his diet...i would talk to your vet. ...or maybe it's the shampoo you use?

I would imagine that some individuals do shed more than others. A lot would also depend on what you do with his coat. You might want to consider having his thyroid levels checked.

Is he pepper and salt or solid Black?
The pepper and salt here in Iceland do shed.
Are there some lines that shed more? or the color?

Hairy
Well, he's a salt and pepper.
It seems the hair he is shedding looks like the wire coat more than normal hair. I think.
We clip him.
I do own a "coat king" stripper, but it didn't seem to do much.
I called the breeder and she said she hasn't heard anyone complain about that before but her sugestions were
a. Make sure he is getting enough Omega 3's
b. Hand strip his coat more often.
So I guess I'm going to try that for now. The hand stripping. He gets Omega 3's in his food.
Thanks for the sugestions

Re: Standard Schnauzer shedding
One of my favorite raking tools now is a thing called "Love2Pet". It is terrific at getting out loose, soft hair very quickly, and works much better than a similar deshedding tool. I mostly use the side with the shorter teeth/blade, but the "comb side" is good at starting to rake a very thick, long coat. The blades swivel back and forth.
Coat Kings are only good on thicker, longer, harder coats. If your dog's hair is too thin or short (or too soft), a Coat King will not work.

I would try a fish oil. I have found that the capsule fish oils are horrible to put on the dogs food. What I am using now is, Grizzly Salmon Oil. Its not super expensive at $14 and its easy to put on their food b/c it comes in a pump.

Vitamin E is also a good supplement for the skin and coat. This will make the skin and coat of your dog healthy.
